International Women’s Day 2023

8 March 2023

For International Women's Day this year, we sat down with some of the inspirational women across Cambridge & Counties Bank to discuss their experience in the finance industry. Whether they've just started their career, or have been in it for many years, we wanted to chat to them about how we can work together to ensure success no matter your gender, and the influences that have moulded their careers to date.

Woman 6.6

Dena Khetani – Finance Business Partner

How would you describe your career journey in finance?

I think perception is reality and as a young woman I struggled to feel heard and valued within the workplace and this impacted my progression. As I matured, I learned to tell myself that I was good enough to achieve anything and find I am more successful, but I have also put in a lot of hard work and made sacrifices along the way.

I think from an early age (in sports) males learn to work as a team and empower each other and I think this is something women should be encouraged to do more of.

What are the potential barriers for progression for women in the finance industry?

Women have menstrual cycles, pregnancies, and menopause to cope with, and the hormones that these come with. I find that because of this, women can be seen as a less desirable candidate compared to men. Once I became a mother, I found it a lot harder to find a position that would allow me to be a dedicated mother as well as a dedicated accountant.

How can companies encourage more women to take up roles in the finance industry?

Flexibility and support - women strive for equality in the workplace but I don’t believe that can truly be achieved without equality in the home. Employers could support men play a more active role at home so women feel they can give more to their careers.

What career tip has helped you?

Attitude determines altitude, and perception is reality. Currently the bank is very focused on women/gender equality but it still does not prevent some women feeling like they cannot speak up, don’t belong, or have as much influence as men. Women are important and your opinion matters. Speak up and be proud and don’t put too much pressure on yourself. We are all human!

Thinking of someone that has inspired you in your career, what traits and qualities did that person have?

Compassion, strength, positivity, empathy, and flexibility. I have been fortunate in having strong, inspiring female managers in parts of my career but unfortunately, they either gave up on the idea of children or went back to work only 6 weeks after childbirth. Why should this be a trade off for a successful career?

Woman 5

Jas Dosanjh-Sidhu – Marketing Communications Executive

How would you describe your time in the finance industry?

I am very much new to the finance industry, and I feel I am learning so much every day. Having such a supportive team who are happy to help every step of the way makes the transition into finance that much easier.

What would you advise someone looking to start a career in finance?

Research and ask questions. We don’t realise the resources we have at our fingertips so utilise them!

What career tip has helped you?

Be yourself and there is no such thing as a silly question! Everyday is a school day and knowledge is power!

Thinking of someone that has inspired you in your career, what traits and qualities did that person have?

I feel a person who speaks up for themselves and for the right thing is a very strong trait to have. We are something put in difficult situations and how a person handles these situations speak volumes.

Woman 2.2

Suzanne Newport - Head of Operational Risk

How would you describe your career journey in finance?

At times challenging and frustrating, however interesting and rewarding overall with many learning opportunities that helped me progress into a leadership role that I thoroughly enjoy.

What are the potential barriers for progression for women in the finance industry?

A lack of confidence to take the next step for fear of failure. Often due to lack of support, encouragement, and female leadership to observe and learn from.

How can companies encourage more women to take up roles in the finance industry?

Ask the right questions to find out why women are not taking up the roles.  Share success stories and real experiences of overcoming barriers to encourage others.

What career tip has helped you?

Practise what you preach and never try to be someone you are not.

Thinking of someone that has inspired you in your career, what traits and qualities did that person have?

Collaborative, calm, observant, good listener, pragmatic and very honest.

Woman 3.3

Zainab Abdulrehman - Operational Risk Specialist

How would you describe your time in the finance industry?

I have been working in the finance industry for nearly 17 years and started my career with RBS.  I would say my time in the finance industry has been challenging (2008 global financial crisis) but rewarding. Through the challenges, I have acquired a lot of knowledge, skill, and experience and have used this to take advantage of opportunities to progress in my career.

What would you advise someone looking to start a career in finance?

Do not limit yourself to a certain role/career path early on and explore different options within the finance industry. Try things outside of your comfort zone – you might be surprised by the roles that you enjoy and excel at (I know I was). Keep learning – the finance industry is ever changing, and it is important to keep up to date with new regulations, technologies, and trends.

What career tip has helped you?

Be proactive and look out for opportunities that will help you advance in your career. Don’t be afraid to ask lots of questions – build relationships with mentors who you trust and can provide you with support and guidance. Build your network by attending events/conferences and connecting with individuals with the same/similar profession.

Thinking of someone that has inspired you in your career, what traits and qualities did that person have?

Someone who inspired me early on in my career was one of my first line managers. She was confident, had good work ethic, great leadership qualities, and was passionate about her job.  With these qualities she was able to inspire, motivate and push others to succeed.

Woman 4.4

Priti Gokani – HR Manager

How would you describe your career journey in finance?

A whirlwind, I never thought I would be where I am today. I came to the bank 7 years ago with no HR or banking experience. Through the support of the bank, and especially my colleagues in HR, I have got my HR qualifications and gained heaps of knowledge and thoroughly enjoyed every minute of my journey.

What are the potential barriers for progression for women in the finance industry?

It can be a male dominated environment. Whilst the bank is working hard to balance the gender gap, unconscious bias unfortunately still plays a big part. Women taking time out to have families can also slow the progression of their career.

How can companies encourage more women to take up roles in the finance industry?

More flexibility, having a diverse approach when recruiting, being open to job-sharing, part-time roles and offering working from home contracts. There are many women out there that have the skills but are unable to commit to full time hours.

What career tip has helped you?

Be open and transparent to new ideas, and work with integrity – if you get something wrong put your hand up and take ownership, learn from your mistakes.

Thinking of someone that has inspired you in your career, what traits and qualities did that person have?

My mum is my hero, she was widowed at 44 with 4 children to bring up, whilst running a home she went out to work everyday from 6am – 6pm and to this day she has never complained.
